Take it Outside!
The
statistics don’t lie – obesity is on the rise
with our kids. This is not good news, when you
consider that obesity raises the risk factor in
a whole host of diseases later in life. Diet is
partly to blame for this trend, but another
factor is our sedentary lifestyle with the
advent of television, computers and video games.
We need to send our kids outside to run and
play, but it’s hard to compete with the many fun
indoor choices today. So what is the solution?
To make outside as much fun as inside, of
course! And the good news is that there are
plenty of choices in outdoor toys that will keep
them running, playing and healthy.
Be a Sport
Unfortunately, watching sports on television is
not as beneficial to young bodies as a game of
touch football. Sports do not only promote a
healthier lifestyle either – studies show that
kids who participate regularly in sports learn
important life skills like teamwork, good
sportsmanship and respecting rules. There are
also some other benefits to outdoor play that
may not be quite as apparent. For example, did
you know that kids who spend more time outdoors
tend to have more vivid imaginations? It appears
that outdoor play fosters a greater creativity
than many indoor activities can. Some studies
even show that playing outside can improve
concentration and observation skills.
There is also the social aspect of sports and
outdoor play. Few children like to play outdoors
alone, since it is always more fun to have
someone to play tag or catch with. Spending time
outside will also help kids to appreciate the
beauty and wonder of nature, and will inspire
them to become better stewards of the
environment. So the next time you send your
children outdoors to gain a bit of peace for
yourself, rest assured that they are receiving
plenty of their own benefits as well!
Move ‘em Out
You may be thinking that this sounds great, but
tearing the kids away from their favourite
screen may not be easy. The key is in creating
an outdoor play area that your children will
relish spending time in. How about the many
slides and swing sets that are on the market
today? Kettler makes a number of models that
will fit any age, garden size and budget. If
space is limited, check out the choices in Razor
scooters. You are sure to find one in the
perfect size and colour to suit every tot in the
family. Recreation Group has a new version of
catch, using a Phlat ball. These balls start out
flat, making them easier to throw, but become
rounded in air so they are caught like a ball.
There is nothing like the outdoors to stimulate
the mind and imagination, and keep young bodies
healthy. With a few outdoor toys on hand, you
will no longer find your kids eyes glued to the
screens of choice. Enjoy the great outdoors. |
