Making Music Together
It
has been said that music calms the savage beast,
and that it is the language of the soul. But did
you know that music can also make your kids a
little smarter? Of course you do, and so do many
other parents, which is why sales of musical
toys have steadily increased since the beginning
of this decade. It also explains why companies
with product lines like Baby Mozart, Neurosmith
and Baby Genius have become household words.
There have been numerous studies done on the
connection between music and academic success
and the results have been compelling, to say the
least.
If you've ever popped in your favourite CD to
dance to as you clean the house, you know that the
right music choices can energize. And those who
have placed a musical toy near a child's cot
probably understand the pacifying effect of
calming tunes. But there is also an intelligence
element to music. It appears that when your
child experiences the meshing of mind and body
over a favourite song, a process called sensory
integration, it helps prepare your child for
school subjects like maths, reading and writing.
Music can also enhance the process of
spatial-temporal reasoning, which is a
neurological building block to the math concepts
that will follow.
Got Rhythm?
Okay, you know why your child should be exposed
to music, but how? There are plenty of options,
since numerous toy manufacturers have jumped on
the Mozart bandwagon. You can find infant toys
that will play music for your baby, and other
musical toys that will allow your toddler a
chance to create his own unique tunes. One
manufacturer that has produced some interesting
choices in musical toys is Melissa and Doug,
creators of many fun toys and activities for the
younger gang. One of their best creations is a
band in a box, that comes equipped with six
instruments that can be banged, shaken and
clacked to your little one's delight.
Another fun option in musical toys is rhythm
sticks, which you can find from a variety of
manufacturers, including Tobar. These sticks can
be banged on any surface to emulate the crashes
and snare sounds of real drums. For added fun,
the ends of the sticks light up every time they
come in contact with the surface. Rhythm sticks
are a good choice because they are completely
portable, unlike that drum set that sits in
Uncle Ben's spare room. This musical toy is the
perfect choice for young kids all the way up to
the young at heart.
Classic music toys are always a popular choice
as well, and you can still find a wide selection
of xylophones, toy pianos and harmonicas that
allow kids to make their own versions of their
favourite songs - and a few tunes that are
completely original as well. Music is timeless,
and musical toys seem to fit that
characterization as well. Start your own
collection and watch the creative juices flow! |
